Not a report but some thoughts on carriages
driving in the rain...
The C&WSDC is privileged to drive in spectacular landscape time and
time again, whether in Norfolk, Suffolk or Cambridgeshire, by
licence on National Trust and Forestry Commission land or by
invitation on farmland or private estate.
This Sunday we drove on roads through quiet villages or along lanes
between racing studs. The country was magnificent, there will be
other counties rich in horses but the area around Newmarket is very
special; it's Knightsbridge not Bluewater, Everest not Snowdon. The
paddocks were magnificent, the horses that were in the field were
beautiful and the setting and maintenance of each establishment was,
for me, memorable.
Gil, John and Rosemary had planned two routes; one was all of 20
miles. BBC weather had forecast rain. The prediction was accurate.
The rain was relentless and it reached places where it had no right
to go.
In addition, we found flaws in two old adages:
-
There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate
clothing… WRONG.
-
Rain before 7 fine by 11... WRONG.
The route was reduced and we returned to the base earlier than had
been planned. There, we were revived with tea and coffee. We
sheltered in a very large barn, not quite as big as the Dome but in
much better surroundings. Shirley brought warm, dry towels for
everyone. Once dry, we enjoyed a magnificent spread prepared by Gil
for lunch, that was quickly followed by tea and Rosemary’s cakes.
Everyone was smiling.
I overheard in the barn, as the dishes were tidied away:
"...now for a warm bath, a book and bed..."
"Then what?"
"...bliss."
The very wet clothes had not dampened our spirits.
